Next year we will celebrate 10 years of our Singing Playgrounds project. Over that period of time we have worked with over 500 schools across the UK and internationally.
A project for everyone in a primary school community, we train a group of children to lead their peers in playing singing games in the playground. The children are trained to lead, share, adapt and create singing games, a teacher is trained to support them in that role and comprehensive resources are provided.
‘Singing Playgrounds is brilliant. I wish I could wave a wand and have it magically appear in every primary school in the country now.’
(Howard Goodall CBE, National Ambassador for Singing 2007 – 2011)
Partners and sponsors to date have included Canary Wharf Group, Sing Up, Birmingham City Council, Derby City Council, Creative Partnerships, MusicLeader, and Sing Up. The project has been showcased at several conferences including the National Association of Music Educators, The Conservative Party, the Association of British Choral Directors, ContinYou, and MusicEducationLive. Media coverage of the project includes a dedicated programme made for Teachers TV, Music Matters on BBC Radio 3, and in the TES.
‘You lit up the school, not just for the week, but for the entire year.‘
(Stephen Holroyd, Principal, Shrewbury International School, Bangkok)
